حدث كان مستمر في فترة  معينة من الماضي

The past continuous describes actions or events in a time before now, which began in the past and is still going on at the time of speaking. In other words, it expresses an unfinished or incomplete action in the past. The past continuous is composed of two parts :

The past tense of the verbe to be ( was / were ) and the bare infinitive + ing

I was working late
You were talking too fast
He was watching television
She was walking to school
It was raining
Whene i was fighting with my brother, i received a call

Example : the student were waiting for the bus.

And befor we start its good to know the verbe to be in the past

We use  the past continuous tense for :

Temporary action in progresse in the past
It was snowing all day yesterday

Action that were in progress when something else happend
While/when i was having dinner, the light went off
I was having dinner when The light went off

Action in progress at the same time in the past
While ahmed was watching TV, the children were playing in the garden.


Key words

While :  we were working while the children were playing
When : I (explain) was explaining the exercise to him when Liverpool scored a splendid goal.
For a longe time yesterday: she was sleeping for a longe time yesterday
All yesterday morning: all yesterday morning I was watching Tv
